Waterproof mattress covers

Has anyone else on this board had any problems with waterproof mattress covers? I've only had mine for a year or so, it is a terry covered one and I have used it fairly regularly. Recently, I've noticed the mattress is getting a little bit wet if I give it a particularly long wee - especially if I lie on my front.

At first I though it might be because it sometimes moves about and doesn't always protect right up to the edge of the bed, but the damp patch is in the middle, am I literally forcing pee through the plastic layer?.

Has anyone else had any issues?

I have found they do wear out pretty fast and develop leaks... Still haven't found the perfect one to date...

I suspect that if you've had it a year and use it "fairly regularly", you've probably reached its life expectancy, especially if you tumble dry it. The plastic backing to the terry cloth is only thin... Time to buy a new one. Alternatively, if you can find the leak, you could perhaps use a flexible rubber adhesive to try and seal the hole?

I had one of those terry towelling covered waterproof prtectors on my bed and it eventually became semi permiable. I put a thick poly sheet under it and that worked fine. All water proof covers wear out. Some quicker than others.

i have a queen bed with a fitted terry towel protector over which i added a pure vinyl protector which encases the entire mattress. this way if I should unexpectedly develope a leak in the pure vinyl, the terry towelling one beneath is a good backupand absorbs any leakage. If the vinyl one does go i have 2 options either patch the hole with tape or simply remove the zippered outter vinyl cover and simply flip it to the unused side and put it back over the mattress a bit of mucking about i know but is quite worth it when your a fancy free bedwetter as i am

after my first bedwetting accident, when my husband said I nearly destroyed an expensive mattress, he insisted on protection. Early on, it was a heavy plastic sheet. Then we found a mattress cover that was both comfortable and waterproof... after a few times on that, I found I could get waterproof hospital pads online, and did... we now use one of those, with a couple of towels for big wettings, on top of the pad, all of this under the sheet.

The mattress cover seldom even gets wet, if the pad and towels do their job. Sometimes, it gets a little wet, when I pee a LOT over night, but not much. It does a good job of protecting the mattress.

When it gets bad enough (which takes a long time), it is tossed in the wash.

I think our mattress cover has a nylon backing, not plastic, but it works well. We bought this one at Target, I think. It is not terry, though, more like a regular mattress cover (like the hotels use) with the water proof backing.

With our (my) use (or abuse), I think this one has been on the bed for well over two years.

Thats what I use now. I quite like it. It's more obvious then the terry ones (crinkles more). I've not had any leaks as yet. I did wash it once, but it took about 5 days to dry, so at the moment, I put a normal mattress protector on top of it, and change that whilst leaving the waterproof one to accumulate pee stains.

I put mine in the dryer - I have never had it taken that long to dry. And if yours crinkles, then it is not like mine. The hotel covers don't crinkle either. It is a cloth cover.

American Wellness protectors

I bought a PUL protector from American Wellness Supply (awshealth.com) that is mainly designed to keep bedbugs out, but it does a good job of keeping liquids away from the mattress also. It's supposed to be machine-washable and -dryable, but after a couple of cycles of drying it began to leak massively. The protector is guaranteed, so AWS sent me another one (after seeing a pic of the resulting large spot on my mattress!). In the future I'll wash it occasionally but not put it in the dryer, even on the Delicate setting. The protector doesn't crinkle, even though it's not cloth on top.

In any case a bedwetter should have a few nice pee stains on their matteras.
