Wanting to get into Cloth Diapers

I am curious about getting into cloth diapers. Until recently, I have totally ignored cloth because the up-front investment is relatively high, plus the care needed and the hassle of cleaning them etc. has kept me away from them. I've always worn disposables because I can just take them off, put them in a bag, throw them in the trash and I'm done with them. But seeing as how my diaper usage is WAY way down, I'm becoming more interested in comfort, plus I wouldn't mind being a little more discreet. I know that with cloth diapers, they tend to leak when you wet them, but I'm more interested in messing them, really. I just need cloth to absorb the small amount of pee that comes out while I'm pushing. Anyway, as I got into researching them, I found out there are a lot of options I don't understand, and I thought maybe you guys could help me.

What is the difference between birdseye, gauze, and flannel? Like, what are the pros and cons of each?

I initially was drawn to pullup diapers, but I'm thinking the flat/prefold diapers are more customizable as far as size goes. I like them nice and tight and I don't think pullups would be very tight. At least with pins you could adjust the tightness and fit of the diaper. I'm not a fan of velcro, I know it can get itchy.

What brands do you recommend? I was actually interested in fancy pants' 16 layer diaper because I don't want to have to wear plastic pants. (I know a 16 layer diaper will not be as discreet, but I'm mostly going to wear around home anyway). I looked at the diapers from fetware and angel fluff and a couple other places, and I just don't know where to start. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

If I may suggest, try e-bay. There is a large selection of styles and colors available for a pretty good price.

Also, any cloth diaper is going to need plastic pants to work properly. Otherwise you will be leaking and leaving wet spots everywhere.

And don't bother with "all in ones" as they leak around the leg gathers. Get a real cloth diaper and separate plastic pants.

Flannel is very smoothly woven cotton. Birdseye is also cotton, but woven in a small diamond pattern. Gauze (I think) uses many different small fine yarns. All are very soft. The gauze ones seem to dry the fastest.

Me? I use very thick flannel diapers because they feel the best (to me, anyway). Especially when they are warm and soaking wet. And especially if I put on baby lotion first!

As "Fox" said, Ebay is a good place to start. Once you find a type that you like, you can usually find an online seller (Ebay or elsewhere) you can order from. There have been several good companies over the years, but it seems as though many don't stay in business for long.

Yes you can certainly wear them without plastic pants especially if you are really wanting them for Messing. Even for peeing they are fine, you could do the pushing in the tub and less mess to clean up later, from the floor.

I would suggest a Birdseye style they are very soft and flexible. Some flannel ones like the ones I bought from HDIS were always firm and never got that soft, they were the prefold style. The body shaped diapers I got from VIP were very soft flannel diapers, not sure if they are still in business.

The diapers I got from Loving Comfort Diaper Company are custom tailored to you with or without Velcro. They are still soft and supple, after 5 years still durable. I think he made these with either Birdseye or terrycloth centers and I had a choice of flannel or Birdseye outside. TollFree number for ordering and he abdl aware.

You can check your local thrift stores, I have found them there occasionally.
The bottom line is if you want to give them a try, then carefully examine the products and buy one, or one from several different suppliers until you find what you want.

I would definite recommend trying them there is nothing like the feeling of being in a wet and or messy cloth diaper.
