  • I am a WHAT???

I just completed my first post since the institution of the new format. I haven't decided whether it is as good as it is cracked up to be.

The first thing I noticed is that I used to be able to track new responses within threads. I could particularly establish when someone responded to one of mine. Now, that is totally gone. It would appear that I now have to track each thread individually, and then go through the entire process of opening, reviewing everything posted thus far, and "JUST" to determine if there is anything new there that I 'may' want to see.

But then, I went back and looked at my one (so far) response. It says I am a "Junior" member. What's this all about? I suppose everyone is a Junior member, initially, but for how long? I am guessing here, but I suppose active longevity doesn't count.

I bet not. Chances are we are junior members unless we pay to be members of the site. Just my 2 cents.

Better that than a privy member.

The Junior Member thing is probably until we get a certain number of posts, though it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. Also, when a thread gets a new response, the title will be in bold, so you can check for new responses that way. Or you can just click on 'thread tools' and subscribe to the thread if you want notifications on new posts.

It's just a default ranking system based on how many posts you've made. Ignore it.

Makes no difference if your a paying member or not. People who are active on other forums will properly know already, that its just a feature built in to the program. The more you post the more you progress up.

I agree it has very little meaning, but I guess its a good way to see how active someone is without having to go through all the posts to see how much they contribute.

I think what pantiespooper was complaining about is that she's been posting for probably over two decades now and she's a little taken aback at being called a junior.

Of course, since the old boards didn't track postcount, there's no way to apply titles retroactively. I like the new style anyway-- gives everyone a fresh start.

It's not impossible to track threads. If you come to the forum and the thread is marked, there are new posts. If not, there aren't. I actually find this a whole lot easier than the old system because new replies are always at the top of the forum instead of buried below every thread that's come since.

I guess for those members who are not used to these things, it can all be a bit of a surprise, but really, no need to load your pants (oh, alright, go on then!)

The Junior Member is just a feature of the software - the more you post, the more you can progress. One board did start to play with it and it is possible that Admins can label members differently, but I imagine Paul and Nikki may not have the time to do so.

And new posts can be easily seen as any new replied posts are in bold or you can click the white on black heading above that says "New Posts".

Always a bit of adjustment required, but as I said, no need to load your pants... unless you want to, of course!

I am glad to see you here, pantiespooper -- I was wondering when you'd finally show up.

                        The old way was better

The old board I could understand at a glance. It was obvious who was replying and to what message. Now I have figure out all this pink stuff. It is not user friendly.

Is a monitor watching? I have a note at the bottom (last paragraph; I put this note here to catch attention, just in case.

Thanks, AT. It was not until a friend in chat told me of the new format that I came to see for myself. I don't get here as much as I used to... or as much as I would like.

I am growing accustomed to the new format, and am in the beginnings of growing used to it. It will take a while - after having had the old format for such a long time, it will not be an easy transition for me. If indications are true, we have more monitors to help weed out the bad stuff. Indeed, I have not seen anything so far.

Will I stay? Yes, I think so. It is not the site that matters so much, it is the people that are here.

Oh, about my title of this post: has anyone noticed that the word abbreviation is so looooooong? (George Carlin once asked why)

Apemantus, I somehow doubt it is the volume of posting that advances us. I have noted only one or two 'Member' status, and a humongous number of 'Junior Member' status, from whom there have been a LOT of posts. If this is truly a criteria, perhaps someone could enlighten us as to what it is. Actually, I would like to be enlightened, even if this is not part of the advancement program.

If someone is watching, I have noticed that many of the threads that appear highlighted (bold) when I sign on appear not to have changed since the last time I read through them. I thought the bolding was to indicate some new addition, but apparently that part is not working right either. Another bug perhaps? Since the bolding appears regardless of whether I have signed in, or not, it would appear there is useless bolding, and we still have to 'open' every thread to determine if there is indeed something new. However, being an engineer myself, I also recognize the kind of programming (and probably bandwidth) that would be necessary to accomplish that.

                            Can someone help?
