  • Questions about suppositories

Does anyone know which one makes a more firmer load?

If so, what sort of brand should I seek?

Or is just a matter of holding it in for a few days before using one?

I've always been unsure how they work.

Most suppositories are mainly glycerine. Once inserted they melt and the lubrication they provide makes it easier to go.

If you want a firmer, bulkier load try fiber supplements like Metamucil... just make sure you drink plenty of water.

With the correct amount of fiber in your diet you shouldn't need a suppository in order to get things moving... but if you want I suppose it wouldn't hurt. My whole point was that there needs to be poop in your system in order for a suppository to make it come out. Bulking agents (or a couple of good salads) will do the trick nicely.

The most common suppositories are glycerin they work by causing additional liquid to be drawn into the bowel, and they irritate making things want to come out.

within 15 to 60 minutes you'll have to go.
They don't do much to make the poop softer. If you were using them because you were a bit constipated its just going to rapidly move big things through a small hole. I find them less fun because they are predictably intense. Once it's done, usually its all over.

That said with a couple of days of extra fibre - which generally makes for a large amount of softer poop - you shouldn't need a suppository. When the need strikes, you gotta go. A suppository on top will just make things move, fast.

With a high fibre diet you might want to try lactulose or polyethelene gylcol (brand names: goltylely / miralax). The reason for that is it flushes things out from the top down.

Lactulose is a sugar your body can't absorb. It works by adding massive quantities of liquid to the stool - and lots of wind. 60ml and maybe 8hrs will see you cleared out a few times over.

The PEG is like an enema drink. Your body doesn't absorb or process it - meaning whatever you drink goes through you in about an hour. You drink a glassful every 15 minutes .. you'll be pooping for at least an hour after that last drink. Ends up being watery and messy. You can happily drink a few litres of this stuff. No risk of electrolyte imbalance.
Combined with fibre I don't think a nappy will hold that much soggy mess for so long.

            wow, don't i feel edu-ma-cated?

            thanks for the help.

never knew they just make you go, always thought they bulked you up, like fibre does.
