Problems accessing Shara and Ger with IE9

Hi folks,

Don't know if anyone else has had this problem yet - IE9 is rather new. I find I now can't get past the disclaimer screen - I click on "HERE" and it just keeps bring me back to the same screen, exactly as if I had tried to directly access a photo on one of the pages.

Anyone have any ideas? I have thought it could be either a security thing that's been tightened in IE9 or perhaps one of the more stringent content-control functions, but there was nothing in the installation to tell me this was going to happen, and I'm a little put off by it.

If you have had this experience or know of someone who has and you know the answer, please post.

The problem is that you are using crappy microsoft product.

Firefox and Chrome are both free and are infinitely better web browsers. Use one of them instead.

I had problems with IE9 too. Chrome works fine though.

The problem with IE 9 is that it wil be blocking the cookie or, more likely, referrer header that Shara & Ger's tests to stop everyone stealing their pictures by linking to them so they display in the thief's website, which may be a pay site, leaving Ger paying for the bandwidth.

It wil be possible to adjust that with a security setting. That is the one area where IE is better than other browsers: you can control the security settings with more detail. The down side is that makes for more problems and it is more complex to use. Better for corporate security though.

Unfortunately, I still use IE 8, so I can't tell you which specific setting(s) to change. So, as others have advised, the best answer is to use something like Firefox! That is more standards compliant and less likely to have problems than Chrome (which, like Safari, uses the WebKit browser engine where errors and omissions reported years ago haven't been fixed).

I actually downloaded firefox to solve that same problem, but IE was so bad, I downgraded (or should I say upgraded) back to 8

Maybe you were using private/anonymous/porn mode or whatever it is called?
I can imagine a browser chooses not to send referer headers in such a mode for privacy reasons. And the website won't work without that header (as I've complained about before).

IE is really weird in the way it does things. It doesn't have very good support for web standards, and tends to force you to code pages for it the Microsoft way.

Often I found myself having to write two sets of code when I was building or making changes to my site. One set for internet explorer, and another set for everything else.

For example, if you visit http://www.patches.net/ with IE9, you will be greeted with one message. If you use IE8 or earlier, you will see a different message. If you use Opera, you will see a another message directed to Opera users.

Firefox is the best browser to use to avoid problems with web sites. Chrome is a very close second IMHO and I am sure some people prefer Chrome over Firefox and I wouldn't argue with them. Safari is also pretty good as a browser but as Wet Trousers pointed out, it uses the WebKit engine which does have a few issues but I consider them minor. The browsers which have the most issues when rendering web pages are Opera and IE although IE9 is a great improvement over IE8.

That is my 2 cents on this whole issue with browsers.

When talking standards, Chrome used to get a slightly higher score than Firefox, although I don't know if that still holds with Firefox 4 (or 6/nightly).

In my experience, Firefox (Gecko) and Chrome (Webkit) are great, and they tie up nicely with HTML5 / JS support. Include every Gecko or Webkit browser (except probably Safari) in that list.
Opera is a very good second. I've only had some problems in less recent versions where form controls could not be colored, and some stuff was moved a single pixel.
Internet Explorer is at the far end, although I can't really complain since version 8. They're behind a bit and as far as I know, they still have no (real) XHTML support, but at least they fixed their box model and most of CSS2.
IE 6 is hell. Even Microsoft is urging users to not use that browser.

Okay, so this was absolutely not off-topic

Anyway, as I said, privacy mode probably blocks referer headers. Try not using it or using a decent browser.

This was an upgrade to and IE8 install I'd been using for years, and I thought perhaps something had carried over, so I reset IE9 to defaults, and that seemed to fix most problems, but the one with Shara and Ger's site was only fixed when I turned off Protected Mode. I know that Microsoft is being ridiculously over the top about security and things like Protected Mode are part of that. I don't really mind not using it.
