Any volunteers to be spam deleters?
Good to see that you worded it that way. More "spam deleters" are good. More "moderators" (censors arbitrarily deleting opinions they don't like) are bad. The moderators are why my time in the chat room has gone from over and hour a night to about an hour every 1 to 3 months.

#1: Make it so you cannot start a thread with your first post. You have to reply to a thread that already exists, then you can create threads starting with your second post.

#2: Limit the number of topics a user can start per day. I think a 5 topic per day limit would be more than generous enough for everyone here.

#3: Allow users to flag posts by other users. If a post is flagged by 10 separate people the poster is prevented from posting for 24 hours. Suffice to say if you've done something to piss off ten regulars you probably need a time out.
It sounds like everyone here is pretty much arguing for the same thing, less spam. We really should give DeltaFoxTrot's idea a try for a month or so and see how it runs. It seems like a pretty solid suggestion and it covers most of the bases, give it a bit of fine tuning and I think we may have found ourselves a short term solution.

What on earth are you on about? Hitler attitude to what exactly? Stopping spammers? I didn't know that Hitler had a problem with spammers! Good luck with your own board.

What we are concentrating our efforts on at the moment is stopping the spammers getting registered in the first place, and we have been quite successful the past 2 days. The only spam came from users already registered months ago. Now that we think they're all deleted, and if we can stop new ones, then there is no need to add other restrictions for registered members posting. We can keep it in mind as Plan B though.

Maybe it's something to do with Hitler's attitude to watersports?

That's hilarious! "Paul, I hate your website (the one that I have taken the time to visit you'll note, despite me not wanting to be here) so much that I am going to set-up my own.... and advertise it here!".

Some people just need to be laughed at.

I have been coming here since the y2k, when I was 16 (sorry Paul!) and first got an internet connection at home. There have been plenty of idiots come and go through the years, but Paul still provides this forum free of charge and it's still the first place I come to for wetting content.

And despite the fact that Paul continues to do this for free, he gets virtually nothing but abuse. Snap out of it guys. Many a fool has claimed they could do it better through the years. They tried, they all failed.

So to buck the trend, Paul, I just want to say thanks for the last 12 years and I hope that if people keep posting good content in with all the crap, hopefully you'll keep this forum going for the people that do appreciate it.

                Hi Aloo,

Thanks for that - much appreciated. It's nice to get some positive feedback. This recent spammer attack might have had a good benefit, because in trying to figure out how to stop them, we think we can do it but at the same time streamline the signup process. So if all goes well we might have some new members and more activity.

Yes, it's crazy that people say stuff like "I hate it here", even though they still come. It makes no sense at all.

You must surely realize that you are never going to be able to stop all the spammers, it's a battle that can't be won. My suggestions are ways to control the behavior of any spammers or other miscreants that may get through the existing filters.

They have no reason to spam this forum. The spambots simply emerge because they know how stuff works. They will probably have some specialized vBulletin logic, and if not, it's quite simple to fill in the required fields automatically by looking at their names.
