Originally posted by ApemantusWell, this is certainly the most entertaining thread on either forum in years!
I actually went back and did a thorough review of that thread Razz mentioned anyhow. Turns out about half the people that posted in that thread were problem members that have received warnings elsewhere on the site about their behavior.
Instead of just locking that thread and moving on, I've permanently banned every single member that contributed to it with extreme prejudice and completely removed it from public sight.
So regardless of your intentions, thanks for prompting me to look into this again.
I'm going to go through and lock a lot of the other problem threads and start clearing out some more of the problem members' posts. After which time, I'll look into getting more moderators to help keep things under control. Once all of that's done, I may re-open the forum.
But again, it all depends, there's no guarantees on what I'll decide to do. I'm sure as hell done putting up with this crap either way though.
Anyone who has a problem with me or the way I run OmoOrg should take this opportunity to migrate to WetSet and hope the admins here are willing to put up with you, because I'm surely not anymore.

Sad day Omorashi
That's the only reason I actually went to that site,
photos are easy to find, they are scattered all over the Web.
Videos and clips are harder and in my book gold when you can find them!
Bad call I reckon, photos are so yesterday.
Have to go looking elsewhere.

I don't think I'm really going to lock the forum permanently.
I've received some helpful/supportive feedback from members over the last 24 hours. I've just been really overwhelmed lately by both real-life and online drama lately. I forget that there really are still a lot of good people in the community, it's just the rude and hateful members who are the loudest and it can really feel like that's all I'm surrounded by sometimes.
So I don't want to take something away from all the members just because of some bad members. Eventually I'll try and hire some moderators to help keep things under control as well.
I'm still doing what I've said here though. I'm locking the problem threads (such as the Real Desperation thread) and am not going to allow these types of topics to start up again, because they're the ones most frequently abused.

I'm sorry for rushing judgement on you then. I didn't mean to turn you into a scapegoat for my personal vent.
I actually have members who are so audacious they immediately repost content after I remove it and warn them about it, or they wait a day or two so I don't notice immediately after and then repost it.
This has actually made some people feel like I actually ignore content that is reported before. It's somewhat baffling how many people will do this without a remote care in the world.
Even so, I've always tried to be as fair as possible in dealing with these issues. Generally, with the exception of severe grade offenses, a member has to receive 5 warnings before they're permanently banned.
I think this leniency and the naive belief that a lot of these members' behavior can be corrected has lead to people thinking they can walk all over me and easily get away with it. I just knocked off over 30 repeat offenders today and permanently suspended their accounts, most of these members have under 15 posts, but still. I know I need to "man up" on this and start putting my foot down more, instead of letting it get to this point where I come close to shutting the entire forum down.
I've also really tried to encourage members to report offending content, because I can't actually download and review every file that's uploaded, the server may have a dedicated 1Gbps connection, but I'm stuck with ADSL where I live o~o. So few members actually do ever report anything though. I get messages from people every now and then saying they plan on leaving the site because some of these things make them uncomfortable, but these people have never highlighted the specific threads/posts that have bothered them before leaving.
Nonetheless, it's not really much of an excuse. I should have taken the advice of some of the forums contributors a while back and shut down that Real Desperation and a few other threads, and definitely shouldn't have allowed that beach desperation thread to remain open for so long.
One of the main reasons I locked the forum was because I wanted to be able to take time to go through all of the posts made in the last few months in detail, clearing out the offending content so that if I did re-open the thread, it could sort of have a fresh start. That's still pretty much what I plan on doing now. I'll probably re-open it either this weekend or some time next week.

It's understandable how the stupidity of select internet users can make you feel this way, however most of the traffic that is brought to your site, i would believe is due to content, and most of the content was present in that thread.
You have build a successful and active forum that has overshadowed forums such as this one due to activity, even though this forum has been around much much longer than your own.
Any forum requires people to monitor it, and a forum as large as omorashi will require more than just yourself to keep it in operation. I have never agreed with the way that omorashi.org has been run, however i will go wherever the content is being shared, and up until recently, that place was omorashi.org.

What exactly are people's gripes with the way it was being run?
I admit Kirito sometimes comes across as a very angry person, but I'm just glad it was there. The collections of FC2 videos demonstrated a great spirit of collaboration which made the videos much more accessible compared to the difficulties the FC2 site presents.
I'll miss all that. It would never happen here even if servers were available, because there'd be too much bitching and arguing, which I'm totally convinced is a big part of the reason for this sites' downfall. Whereas on Omorashi.org, people just seemed to get on with it, for the most part as far as I could see.
And conversely, I never looked at the desperation thread because it's not my thing. I like to cut straight to the wetting, so I don't know what happened on that thread.Last edited by mysteron; March 1, 2014, 01:20 PM.

Forums come, forums go.
That's the one unequivocal truth I've come to realise over my (many) years on the internet.
This is the life-cycle of a forum, *any* forum, on any subject:
- The Early Days
A close-knit group of like-minded people enjoying their interests together. Everybody gets on well and nobody gets angsty. The forum owner thinks this is wonderful and honestly believes their forum will always keep this tone. - Growth
People start to discover the forum by word of mouth or links from other places. For the most part, the tone is still good although occasionally, the admin gets called upon to intervene in some kind of issue. They don't like this but presume that it will just be an occasional problem so they put it to the back of their mind. - The Mainstream
The forum continues to grow and becomes one of the main places where people with Interest X come to discuss and share their passion. Numbers bring drama and general administrative problems and so the forum owner seeks to bring additional moderators onboard to lighten the load on themselves. Meanwhile, their bandwidth bill, which has been slowly but manage-ably increasing of late, starts to snowball. You also find yourself increasingly having to deal with outside groups (such as rights holders) who start to want to have an element of control over content on your forum now that you're popular. - The Point of No Return
The community grows further, as do all previously mentioned problems. You start to see the development of a two-tier membership. Those who are super popular and 'the rest'. Those who are super popular tend to push boundaries from time to time. You (as the admin) feel that you are between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, you like having major community contributors on your board and don't want to run them off but on the other hand you know that if you let them get away with pushing the rules, you know that the rest of your members will (rightly) expect the same leeway. You don't quite know how to handle this but there's no shortage of users who will tell you what *they* think you should do. - Disillusionment (where omo.org is right now)
You're sick to the back teeth of dealing with drama, complaints about the way you run the place, copyright problems (if applicable) and you find yourself not wanting to deal with it any more. In a last gasp effort to 'return to the roots', you implement a major change, hoping that the good old days will come back. They won't. - The End
You're fed up, the community is fractious and bitchy, your Big Changes didn't really fix the underlying cancer that's festering in a dark corner and little relevant content is posted any more. You give up and either close the place down or let it rot.
Or to put it another way:
Small = happy.
Happy = growth.
Growth = problems.
Problems = pissed off admins.
Pissed off admins = pissed off visitors.
Pissed off visitors = no forum.
I say this having experienced the process myself and with the greatest respect for Shu - running a successful forum and keeping it running is damn near impossible in the middle- to long-term. Almost every forum goes through this process and it's almost inevitable. The upshot, though, is that as a major forum in a community reaches the end of it's life cycle, another springs up in it's wake. And thus the circle of life continues.
TL;DR: Forums don't last forever. Ever.Last edited by xxxxx; March 1, 2014, 02:22 PM.
