  • What is happening

What has happened to the site. Full of spam and probably bad virus's. Hope it gets sorted real soon

Because the MODS won't make it where you can't start a new thread until you've made, say, 10 posts. It's really a simple thing to do that would defeat most bots instantly.

      Spam Removed

I just removed a whole bunch of spam posts from the Photoboard. The spam was very similar and posted with over a dozen different user names. Some of the users have been members for months but have never posted anything until today. Not only was the spam removed but all those users were banned.

This does not stop them from creating new user accounts but it will slow them down and bit plus send a message to them that spam will not be tolerated here. I will try to monitor all posts very closely for the next week or so but if you spot any more spam, please report it so I can get it deleted even quicker.

          Slowing Down the Spammers

Just as fast as we can ban the spammers and delete their posts, they register again with a new name. To stop this nonsense, we are temporarily requiring all new forum members to be approved by an administrator. We are sorry for the delay this will cause new members who want to legitimately contribute to the discussions here but we cannot allow this relentless spam to go unchecked or it will destroy the forum. Thank you for your understanding!

The spam is stupid and counter productive

I am an SEO specialist and the spam that is going on here actually harms the sites they think they are helping.

The spam is being done by a rookie SEO, links on this forum to watches or clothes work as Google minus points as Google knows it is spam (more so if the post is marked as deleted), so mods message the idot and tell him he is harming his clients and pissing off us.

Please make this permanent! There are other sites which do this routinely, requiring a certain minimum number of posts to be approved for posting before the new member is allowed full access. This change would permanently stop the problem. This isn't the first time it's happened here and it won't be the last, unless you make this change permanent.

                  Bans Are Permanent

All the recent spammers have been banned permanently. There were 4 new posts today by at least 2 new spammers. They have been permanently banned too and their posts have been deleted. I am trying to find out from Paul who approved these new members because they never should have gotten on the forum.

                    Bad Actor!

There is one person who keeps registering on forums over and over again using different user names and email addresses. To see what I mean, take a look at http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/69.30.244.66 and you will see a list of activity for the past month by this spammer. We know of ways to block this IP address from even connecting to our server but I need Paul's permission before I implement it.

To save time, Paul blocked this IP address from accessing our server himself. This is not the only IP address which has been used recently to post spam in our forums. As soon as we spot additional spam, we will not only permanently ban the person but also delete their posts and block access to our server from their IP address as well.

It appears that these posts may be coming from spambots and not real people (or at least this is true in some cases). As we keep blocking the IP addresses for every spam post, it should quickly bring the spam to an end. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who has reported spam posts by clicking on the little red triangle above and to the right side of the spam. It helps us find the spam quickly.

Again... the best thing do is require a new member to make, say, 10 posts in pre-existing threads before they can start a new topic. Most spammers won't go through all that trouble and bots definitely won't do it.

DeltaFoxtrot, you're right. We've had all this before. All the measures being taken now have been taken before, and the spam just comes back (eventually). Something new is required, something that requires behaviours that are not typical of spammers or spambots.

The problem seems to be that it requires some programming of the interface to achieve it. All methods used to date to deal with this problem have not, which indicates to me that there is a reluctance to do this.

I'll put it this way... if ADISC can do it on their forum, WS can do it here.
