Looking at their domain registration at https://www.whois.net/ it shows that their domain name was renewed on 02/19/2018 and will expire on 02/17/2028 so it is not a matter of their domain name expiring. I think there are a couple of possibilities for not being able to view their website. First, someone misconfigured their domain nameserver when they renewed their registration. Second, someone hacked their server so that all visits to the domain are redirected to another server.
I know that my domain was hacked a couple of times when I owned patches.net so that visitors were redirected to other websites. This can happen to anyone.
