This Firefox extension does not have very good reviews, which say it is limited to downloading lower quality videos, you can't set the name, etc. If anyone wants higher quality (720p / 1080p) downloads, this extension is better: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/fir...wnloader-lite/ [URL now corrected]. It adds a down arrow near subscribe to download. It also offers a paid-for add-on to re-assemble the streams into the high quality files but I would not recommend that. Instead, this can be done easily and quickly for free with a one-line command using FFMpeg, which most of us will have:
ffmpeg.exe -i "video.m4v" -i "audio.m4a" -c copy "combined.mp4"

I don't understand the recent obsession with super hi-def porn. Exactly how big of a screen are people watching this stuff on? I see 10min videos now that are over a gig in size, it's insane! Unless you just happen to be watching on a 50"+ screen there's no need for that level of resolution... it all gets squished down so it's completely wasted.

Hi DF, normal HD TVs (mine is 39 inches) have resolution 720p so that is the best resolution to download. I wouldn't bother with 4K as I don't have room in the flat (apartment) for a TV large anough, as you say. I don't even bother with 1080p, also HD, as the files get larger.

The largest resolution you can download from YouTube now without having to combine separately (unless it's an old file) is often 360 (sometimes 480), so that is a quarter of an HD TV and less than an old analogue cathode ray tube TV (remember those?) which supported 625 lines in the UK and something in the 500s in the USA. If you display that on now-standard HD TV, it looks 'blocky'.

So what I am talking about is getting something needed even for a TV from the 1980s, not a 'recent obsession' as you put it. Check your TV resolutions!

The downloader checks what the real resolution of the file is and also gives you the possibility to download other resolutions if you want to. You can even download complete playlists, and for those who want only the sound of clips in MP3. You only have to copy/paste the URL in it. It also downloads age restricted files without login in.

I'm afraid you don't understand how that works, pipi. It downloads the separate streams (which is what I said you have to do) then combines them in an app you have installed on your computer. If you want to install an app, that's fine and less effort than combining as I described. What you can't do any more is get the high res combined file with an add-on to the browser, something else is needed.

My laptop screen is 17" and sitting on my lap it's relatively just as big as the 42" TV I've got hanging on the living room wall. Even when I take my old 480p vids and throw them on the 42" they look fine. You've got to have a 50"+ TV for any difference in "HDTV" to become apparent.

Yes, that way I can sit on the sofa and watch across the room rather than sit on a hard chair at the computer and watch at 2 feet. The two are network-connected so the computer can act as a file server to the smart TV (not just for this but video recordings and other doenloads too). It looks similar (someone can check by calculating the subtended angles if they want!) and is a lot more comfortable on the backside!
